Thyroid Cancer
Thyroid cancer is a type of cancer that grows in the thyroid gland. This is the least most common cancer among the list of common cancers with a minimum of 30,000 new cases per year. The American Cancer Society estimates 30,180 new cases consisting of 7,590 (25%) men and 22,590 (75%) women in 2006. 1,500 deaths (630 men and 870 women) was predicted for 2006.
There are a four main types of thyroid cancers:
- Papillary thyroid cancer
- Follicular thyroid cancer
- Medullary thyroid cancer
- Anaplastic thyroid cancer
The chances of survival depends on the type of thyroid cancer and the staging of the cancer. Treatments of thyroid cancers also vary. Papillary, Medullary, and follicular thyroid cancer treatments generally involve the removal of all or part of the thyroid gland. Medullary thyroid cancer treatments sometimes require radiation therapy. Lastly, anaplastic thyroid cancer treatments typically make use of both radiation and chemotherapy.
