What is Dichloroacetate (DCA)?

Recently, there has been more and more coverage on DCA, or dichloroacetate, which is a new breakthrough when it comes to treating cancer. While many people are hearing about DCA cure for cancer, there is much more to the subject than there may appear to be. When it comes to understanding DCA and how it works, you first have to understand how the cells of the body work. You see, all cells, even cancer cells, need energy in order for them to grow. Although most normal cells use what is called a Krebs cycle to grow, cancer cells use a different process that does not involve the cell’s mitochondria. Basically, DCA is a type of chemical that seems to be similar to the chemical that is used in the Krebs cycle of normal cells.

How Does Dichloroacetate (DCA) Treat Cancer?

Since the cancer cells do not use the Krebs cycle, basically the mitochondria in these cells are not working as they should. Some tests using DCA have actually shown that putting DCA into the cancer cells actually turns the mitochondria back on, which in turn causes the cancer cells to die. This treatment has only been tried out in the labs on cancer cells that were grown; however, scientists are hoping to try it out on humans in the near future. DCA is already being used to treat various metabolic disorders in adults and humans, and some seem to think that DCA is a cure for cancer.

The tests that have been done in the lab seem to show DCA as a cure for cancer. It has been used effectively to slow the growth of cancerous tumors and in some cases has actually reduced the size of the tumors as well. While they could not totally prove that the cancer was totally cured, it definitely did seem that it helped to slow down cancer growth to at least some degree. Although the lab tests sound wonderful, it is extremely important that people understand that DCA has yet to be tested in actual humans, so no one is really sure if DCA will really work as a cure for cancer.

Side Effects of Dichloroacetate (DCA)

One of the concerns that comes with DCA is whether or not it is actually safe. When DCA has been used to treat other physical problems, there have been many different side effects associated with it. Some of the side effects even affected the nervous system, which can be quite dangerous. DCA is also a pollutant and it has been known to cause cancer in some animals, so it is not quite clear whether it is really safe for treating cancer in humans or not. Further clinical trials will have to be done using DCA to fully realize whether or not this will be a harmful problem or a safe way to try and treat cancer.

DCA definitely seems to hold promise when it comes to cancer treatment; however, no one is quite sure what the future holds. While some seem to think that DCA is a wonder drug for cancer, in reality, it is still not clear how effective it will be in cancer treatment.
